Sri Lanka restricts Pakistan to 57-1 in 2nd test

Sri Lanka restricted Pakistan to 57-1 at lunch on the first day of the second test on Wednesday after captain Angelo Mathews won the toss and elected to bowl first.

Fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep (1-20) had struggling Ahmed Shehzad (3) trapped lbw after the opener was dropped by Mathews in Suranga Lakmal’s fifth over of the innings.

Khurram Manzoor, who needs a big knock after scoring only 33 in his last five test innings, laboured to 36 with three fours off 72 balls. Mohammad Hafeez was not out on 13.

After Shehzad’s dismissal, Pradeep, by far the fastest of the three Sri Lanka pacemen, was unlucky not to get rid of Hafeez off the next delivery when Mahela Jayawardene could not hold onto a low, one-handed catch.

Sri Lanka also wasted one of their two television referrals when Shaminda Eranga hit the back leg of Manzoor on 23 but TV replays showed the ball was clearly going over the stumps.

The three-match series is level at 0-0 after Sri Lanka rallied in the first test at Abu Dhabi with Mathews’ career-best unbeaten 157 to force a draw.

Pakistan only made one change to its starting lineup, with wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed replacing Adnan Akmal, who fractured his left index finger during the first test.

Surprisingly, Pakistan didn’t include left arm spinner Abdul Rehman and instead stayed with Rahat Ali despite the fact that the Dubai wicket favours spinners as the game progresses.

Sri Lanka also made one change, bringing in third seamer Pradeep in place of off spinner Sachithra Senanayake, who was wicketless in his debut test at Abu Dhabi.
