Militants launched a major attack on a security forces’ fort in the Landi Kotal area of the Khyber tribal region late on Thursday night.
The attack came one day after the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) revoked its 40-day-long ceasefire.
Official sources said that the militants had fired bullet rounds and mortars from the adjoining mountains at a weapons depot situated inside the fort that is controlled by the security forces.
The residents heard several explosions caused by the exchange of fire between the militants and the security forces. Some of the locals added that they had seen flames rising high from the fort.
According to some sources, the militants had launched the attack from four sides.
Some suicide bombers were reported to be among the attackers, whose number is unknown.
The security forces also returned the fire and targeted the militants’ positions with mortars and artillery rounds.
The extent of the material damage caused and the number of human casualties could not be ascertained independently due to a lack of access to the area where the skirmish was taking place.
No official version of the incident has been issued by the security forces.
