Eight die, several get injuries in rain incidents in Karachi

KARACHI, Aug 3 (APP): At least eight persons including two children died and several others sustained injures in rain-related incidents and from electrocution in the city here on Saturday. According to police, hospitals and Edhi Ambulance Service, a 3-year-old child died when the roof of their house collapsed in Gulzar-e- Hijri due to heavy rainfall. Two people died from electrocution in Paposh Nagar area of the city. One person was killed and two others injured in Model Colony while 50- year-old Nawab died in Liaquatabad-C area due to electrocution. Two children drowned in storm-water drain in Korangi No 5 and another drowned in North Naizamabad area.

After heavy rainfall which started in the morning, the roof of a CNG station collapsed at NIPA Chowrangi leaving several people injured who were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
According to Met Office, Landhi received the maximum amount of rainfall around 53 millimetres while 47 mm rain was recorded in Nazimabad, and 26 mm recorded near Karachi Airport.
Most of public transport went off the roads while taxis and rickshaws which are now devoid of fare meters fleeced those desiring to hire them for any distance.
Scores of vehicles were stranded on the submerged roads and their occupants were seen trying to push them through water. The Liaquatabad Underpasses were badly flooded and appeared to lack a storm-water exit besides being without light in the cloudy, dark afternoon.
Many areas remained without power supply following the downpour.
Several roads in the city were flooded with rain water which alsocaused traffic jams.
Different cities and towns in the interior of Sindh also received heavy rainfall.
